Port of Durrës: A Strategic Gateway Driving Sustainable Transformation

As part of our ongoing series on global ports and their journey toward sustainability, the International Transport Development Association (ITDA) visited the Port of Durrës — Albania’s largest and most strategically significant seaport located on the Adriatic coast.

The Port of Durrës is a key logistics hub, handling over 7.35 million tons of cargo, more than 200,000 TEUs, and over 770,000 passengers in 2024. Beyond its operational scale, the port stands as a symbol of Albania’s green transition.

In 2025, construction began on the nearby Spitalla 100 MW solar park, a major renewable energy project developed by Voltalia (France). This initiative aims to supply clean energy to the region and contributes to national decarbonization goals.

In parallel, the Port of Durrës is actively involved in the SUPAIR (Sustainable Ports in the Adriatic-Ionian Region) initiative, which focuses on:

  1. Enhancing energy efficiency

  2. Reducing CO₂ emissions

  3. Modernizing port infrastructure

The Port of Durrës serves as a strong example of how transport infrastructure can become a catalyst for sustainable growth and regional innovation.
